Everyone is here at Walter Reed doing the Christmas thing.
The problem is that I can't get a straight answer on anything. Mom and Dad tell each other and us half-truths to spare us distress. And I don't think they know all that's going on either. But I finally spoke to the main doctor this morning and this is what we have.
He has bacteria in his blood. Pseudomonas. He has no white blood cells to fight it. None. The infection is coming from two intertwined things. A cat-scan revealed necrotic bone tissue in his mouth. Basically, his teeth and part of his jaws are rotted and dead and sourcing the pseudomonas. Also, he's got a massive sinus infection, which would be ok for the rest of us but without the white blood cells...
So the prognosis is this: He has to get into a physical condition to survive dental surgery. That means he has to have platelets at 20,000, a reduction in the infection, no fever, and no bleeding. This morning the doctor said he has met the first benchmark and that the infection is, indeed, reducing some. He's been getting slightly feverish at night and he was not bleeding (internal bleeding) until just a few hours ago when a test showed that has begun again.
He could go either way. If he gets the surgery it will be an extremely difficult recovery. I just hope we can get to that point.
The anti-biotics and pain killers have got him a bit confused and frustrated. He's been halucinating and confused. He thought the nurses had moved him into the "dying room". The nurse said they moved him to that room because he was walking around in the middle of the night all confused and scared and they wanted to keep a closer eye on him. That was actually pretty funny, after the fact.
He's more lucid now, but rather sedate. He actually looks fine...at least compared to last October.
We'll see.
